The older I get, the rarer it is for me to encounter something genuinely new in my professional life. Yet, SuomiAreena managed to surprise me. It reminded me that there is still a strong appetite for dialogue, a need for community, and good reason to remain optimistic about the future.

This year marked the 20th edition of SuomiAreena. I had heard a great deal about the event over the years but had never attended myself. I arrived in Pori with modest expectations. Having spent years attending conferences, seminars and industry events, I assumed I had a fairly good idea of what to expect.

A few days later, I realised I had been mistaken.

What changed my perspective was not a particular speaker or a standout panel discussion. It was the way people came together to discuss issues that matter and, more importantly, to listen to one another.

There is still room for dialogue

What impressed me most about SuomiAreena was its openness.

Students, working professionals, retirees and families with children all gathered around the same stages. Public debate was not reserved for experts and decision-makers. People from very different backgrounds took part in the discussions and followed them with genuine interest. The atmosphere was exceptionally inclusive and community-driven, reminding everyone present that the issues shaping society belong to all of us.

What makes SuomiAreena special is not an extraordinary number of memorable speeches or high-profile speakers. Its strength lies in the diversity of the conversations taking place across the event.

During my days in Pori, I listened to discussions on topics ranging from optimism about the future to data centres, equality, energy, security, media, working life, democracy and Nordic cooperation. Few events bring together such a wide range of issues that matter to society.

The real value lies between the stages

Yet the most valuable part of SuomiAreena was not what happened on stage. It was what happened between the stages.

Within a few city blocks, politicians, civil servants, business leaders, researchers, journalists, NGO representatives and other influencers moved through the same spaces. The atmosphere was relaxed, hierarchies felt almost non-existent, and conversations continued long after the official programme had ended. They took place over coffee, on the way to the next venue, and in spontaneous encounters throughout the city.

Many important insights, fresh perspectives and future collaborations emerge in precisely those moments. That is why the value of SuomiAreena cannot be measured by its programme alone.

When an organisation has something to say

From a communications professional’s perspective, SuomiAreena is particularly valuable for organisations that have something meaningful to contribute to societal discussions.

Many of our clients work on issues that affect society broadly and extend well beyond the boundaries of their own industries. These topics may include digitalisation, data, cybersecurity, the energy transition, skills development, the future of work or wellbeing. SuomiAreena creates a space where these issues can be discussed as part of a broader societal conversation rather than solely through a business lens.

For that reason, SuomiAreena is not necessarily the right venue for organisations focused on product promotion or immediate lead generation. There are more suitable events for those objectives.

Instead, it is particularly well suited to organisations that have research, unique data, recognised expertise, or a clear vision for the future of their sector. It provides an opportunity to contribute to public debate, build thought leadership, and connect with decision-makers, journalists, and influencers in an unusually accessible setting.

Why I plan on returning to SuomiAreena

My first SuomiAreena experience convinced me that the event could provide a genuinely valuable platform for many of Netprofile’s clients. That is why I hope Netprofile will return to Pori next year, not only on our own but alongside our clients.

Finland is currently engaged in many important conversations about the future, and businesses have an important role to play in them. SuomiAreena is one of the few places where these conversations intersect.

And more often than not, the most meaningful conversations begin only after the panel discussion has ended.
